Who is Michelle Odine?

A Louisiana judge is asking for ‘forgiveness’ after video captured her repeated use of the n word as she and her family viewed surveillance footage of a black robbery suspect attempting to break into her home.

Michelle Odinet, 52, a mother of four, is heard making racist comments at her home in Bendel Gardens in Lafayette early Saturday morning.

The short clip captured one of Odinet’s children saying ‘And mom is screaming n **** r, n **** r’, to which a female voice responds ‘We have a n **** r’. He is a black, like a cockroach.

Since then, the Republican judge has come under fire for racist insults, and local officials and community members have asked her to resign.

The full video had shown Odinet and his family laughing as they viewed the footage with other members making similar racist comments and spitting profanity.

Ronald Handy, 59, who is black, was arrested and charged with two counts of petty theft and is being held in the Lafayette Parish jail on a $ 10,000 bond.

Handy was seen being shot down by two members of the Odinet family in the front garden of his home during the attempted robbery.

Odinet claims that he had taken a sedative when the video was recorded and does not recall the comments he made.

“My children and I were victims of an armed robbery at our home,” he told The Current.

The police were called and the assailant was arrested. The incident shook me to my core and my mental state was fragile. ‘

‘Anyone who knows me and my husband knows that this is contrary to the way we live our lives.

“As a proud black man, and the Lafayette City Marshal,

“As a proud black man, and the Lafayette City Marshal, I strongly believe that Judge Odinet must be held accountable,” Lafayette City Marshal Reggie Thomas told Acadiana Advocate.

I am sure that people of color will find it impossible to trust that they will be treated fairly and equally when they have to appear before judge Odinet.

‘This type of language cannot be accepted or tolerated by anyone, especially those who serve as leaders in our city.

‘It is up to Judge Odinet to remember the oath she took, and if she remains on the bench, find a way to regain the trust of’ everyone ‘in Lafayette, especially African Americans. A mere ineffective and weak apology will not suffice.

Alanah Odoms, executive director of the Louisiana American Civil Liberties Union,

Alanah Odoms, executive director of the Louisiana American Civil Liberties Union, has also called for an investigation into Odinet’s behavior.

This behavior calls into question the aptitude of Judge Odinet to try black defendants who appear before her court. Equal justice before the law means nothing if the judges take office and consider that some people are subhuman, ” Odoms told the Daily Advertiser.

Odinet had been elected in November 2020 after winning 57 percent of the vote against candidate Jules Edwards III.

He took over the Division A seat for Judge Francie Bouillion at Lafayette City Court.

He had previously worked as an assistant district attorney in New Orleans and Lafayette, as well as a law firm where he handled insurance defense cases.

Since she was elected, she has planned to start veterans court programs, working on financial assistance methods and creating cell phone lockers to keep them out of the courtroom.
