Who was Mia Goodwin?
A Charlotte-Mecklenburg police officer was killed in an accident involving a trailer truck early Wednesday morning in north Charlotte, according to CMPD chief Johnny Jennings.
The collision, which involved two trucks and four Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department vehicles, occurred around 3:40 a.m. in the southbound lanes of Interstate 85 near W.T. Harris Boulevard.
Officer Mia Goodwin, 33, was part of CMPD’s University City Division, according to Jennings.
“We put this uniform on and we know there are no guarantees that we will go home to our families and that’s the hardest part,” Jennings said, adding, “It’s one of those situations where we realize that life It is not guaranteed and life is short and we have to embrace it. ”
Jennings said the CMPD has reviewed video of the collision many times and is working to figure out how to improve the safety of police officer at crash sites, despite the actual impact on drivers.
“That only happens when people realize there are blue lights on the road, slow down and take extra precautions,” he said. “And if you don’t, you are endangering the lives of the men and women who are there to serve and protect.”
“This profession is one that is not for everyone,” he continued. “I know she knew it was for her . I know she wanted to go on and make this a career and not just a job.”
She is continuing an investigation to determine why the tow trucks collided. Criminal charges are possible, Jennings said during her press conference at 10 a.m.
One of the truckers was taken to hospital, according to authorities.
“The officers, I can tell you, are distraught about what happened. They are excited about what happened,” Jennings said. “What I can also tell you is thank godness hat the officers who survived are alive today. If you see the aftermath of the collision and what happened, we are fortunate that we are not talking about more officers who succumbed to injuries.
Jennings said the other three officers are “doing as well as expected.”
CMPD was assisting the North Carolina State Highway Patrol when the fatal accident occurred. At that time of night, the state law enforcement agency has between two and four soldiers covering the Charlotte area, a department spokesman told WCNC Charlotte. In total, there are 34 soldiers assigned to Charlotte.
