About 400,000 people arrived in the village of Bethel, about 50 miles northwest of New York City, enduring mile-long traffic jams, torrential rains, food shortages and overwhelmed toilet facilities.

“Woodstock was a test of whether people of our generation really believed in each other and in the world we were striving to create,” Lang wrote in his 2009 book The Road to Woodstock. “How would we do when we were in charge? Could we live as the peaceful community we envision? I was hoping we could.”

Born in Brooklyn, NY, Lang briefly attended New York University before moving to Florida. It was there that he got the idea for Woodstock after organizing the Miami Pop Festival in 1968, headlined by Jimi Hendrix.


In an interview with the AP at the time, Lang called the experience “a really strange journey” and said he looked forward to holding the concert in the future.

Although Woodstock is considered to create the template for large-scale music festivals, it was not the first in the US Two years earlier, the Monterey Pop festival drew about 200,000 people to California. In 1968 the Miami Pop Festival followed, which Lang also organized.

But Woodstock nonetheless occupies an indelible place in history.
