She is Born: 1968 (age 54), New Orleans, Louisiana, United States

A Louisiana judge resigned after video captured her repeated use of the word n as she and her family viewed surveillance footage of a black robbery suspect attempting to enter her home.
Michelle Odinet, 52, resigned her seat in the Lafayette city court on Friday, just weeks after the video surfaced using racist language.

“I take full responsibility for the hurtful words I used to describe the individual who stole the vehicles from my home,” Odinet wrote in her resignation letter to the Chief Justice of Louisiana.

“I am sorry for the pain I have caused my community and I ask for your forgiveness, as my words did not promote the trust and integrity of the public in the judiciary,” she added.

Odinet had taken a sedative, she says.

Earlier this month, the Lafayette Police Department said, two vehicles were robbed at the driveway of a home owned by Odinet and her husband. One of the victims was returning home when she saw the suspect get out of one of the vehicles, police said. The suspect was hunted, captured and held until officers arrived, police said.

In the video of Odinet’s home, which was circulated online, people appear to be watching footage of the incident on a television. A male voice is heard saying, “Mom is screaming n *** er, n *** er.” A female voice says while laughing: “He is a black, like a cockroach.”
It is unknown who shot the video or how it was made public.
Odinet apologized and said he had been “given a sedative,” according to CNN affiliate KATC. She did not “remember the video and the disturbing language used during it,” she said.

Ronald Handy arrested and charged

Ronald Handy, 59, who is black, was arrested and charged with two counts of petty theft and is being held in the Lafayette Parish jail on a $ 10,000 bond.

Handy was seen being shot down by two members of the Odinet family in the front garden of his home during the attempted robbery.

At the time, Odinet claimed that he had taken a sedative when the video was recorded and does not recall the comments he made.

“My children and I were victims of an armed robbery at our home,” he told The Current.

The police were called and the assailant was arrested. The incident shook me deeply and my mental state was fragile. ”

Victim

When the suspect saw the victim arrive, the suspect tried to flee on foot, but was quickly caught by the victim. The victim held the suspect until officers arrived, “the Lafayette Police Department report said.

Her excuses have not swayed critics who say she should be removed.

“As a proud black man and Sheriff of the City of Lafayette, I strongly believe that Judge Odinet must be held accountable,” Lafayette City Chief Reggie Thomas told the Acadiana Advocate.

I am sure that people of color will find it impossible to trust that they will receive fair and equitable treatment when they have to appear before Judge Odinet.

investigation

“This type of language cannot be accepted or tolerated by anyone, especially those who serve as leaders in our city.

“It is up to Judge Odinet to remember the oath he took, and if he remains on the bench, find a way to regain the trust of” everyone “Lafayette, especially African Americans. A mere weak and ineffective apology will not suffice.

State Sen. Gerald Boudreaux was also concerned by the comments and is working on an investigation.
