Who was Robert Downes?
The brother of a missing schoolgirl who was said to have been cut up, served as kebab meat and crushed in tile grout, was found dead ‘in a pool of blood’ just days before Christmas.
The body of Robert Downes, 30, was discovered at the family home in Blackpool, Lancashire, on December 4, just hours after complaining of discomfort.
The tragedy comes 18 years after 14-year-old Charlene Downes disappeared without a trace from the resort, prompting one of the largest police investigations in history.
Police believe that Charlene was murdered by men who had s*xually abused her, but her body has never been found.
Two local takeout workers were tried for the teen’s murder in May 2007 when prosecutors claimed that Charlene’s body had been sliced and chopped on skewers and her bones crushed in tile grout.
But the charges were dropped when a jury failed to reach a verdict.
Robert’s distraught mother, Karen, 56, said she will not celebrate Christmas Day after the latest tragedy, adding that she “will never be the same again.”

She said: ‘I am heartbroken. I still can not believe it. I keep thinking that she will come over and knock on the door.
Losing him and Charlene is too much; I know it’s been 18 years, but it’s not getting better. I will never be the same again.
Robert was the baby of the family and my only son. I already know what it’s like to lose a child and it’s not something you can get over.
I’m sitting here and I cry every day. I still have the last shirt he wore.
‘There are no Christmas decorations in our house. There will be no Christmas for us. It has completely devastated me. ‘
“They said ‘sorry, he’s gone’. I just screamed,” Karen said.
“They said ‘sorry, he’s gone’. I just screamed,” Karen said. “He was perfectly fine that morning, and just a few hours later he was dead on the ground. The worst part was seeing him being taken away in that bag. It’s unreal. He was only 30 years old. I can’t understand it was – it was so sudden.”
After Robert’s Death
After Robert’s death, an autopsy was carried out, but the results were not known, meaning that his family must now wait for an investigation to determine the cause.
His death is a crushing blow tto his family, which is no stranger to tragedy, after 14-year-old Charlene disappeared on November 1, 2003.
Karen last saw her at 7:15 p.m. from that day when she kissed her goodbye at a Church Street bus stop as she was on her way to meet friends downtown. Police believe she was murdered within hours of the last sighting of her, and suspicions arose that she had been the victim of child s*xual abuse at the hands of one or more men.
Charlene’s disappearance seriously affected the family, and Robert was treated in Manchester when Karen became unable to cope. There he had trouble at school and was excluded for hitting another student who made fun of him over rumors that his sister had been killed and cooked in kebabs.
He later fell into drug abuse and was jailed for attacking Karen in 2019, but she says he had improved dramatically since she got out of jail in August 2020 and was looking forward to spending the new year with her children. her.
A fundraiser organized in his memory raised over £ 400. Karen said: “Robert was beautiful, he was outrageous, he was funny and he was loud. When he got out of prison in August last year he had put on weight, he looked so good, he was going to gym. He was a different man since he came in. He wasn’t an angel, he had his flaws, I’m not going to give him a bright halo. But he was my boy and we love him. ”
Enya, who was with Robert for 13 years, said: “Robert was doing brilliantly, and he was a Robert that I had never seen before. He was very focused. I have never seen him so full of life. He was doing so well.” . He even talked about getting married.
“He didn’t like to talk about his life, but everyone knew that he didn’t have an easy life, especially after what he happened to Charlene.
“He was the most charming boy you could ever meet. People misjudged him; they read things about him and made assumptions about him, but he had the biggest heart. He always wanted to make someone smile.”
