The story of how the families of four men killed by ‘Grindr serial killer’ Stephen Port fought for justice will be told in a new BBC series starring Stephen Merchant.
Four Lives, which premieres Monday night on BBC1, tells the tragic stories of Anthony Walgate, Gabriel Kovari, Daniel Whitworth and Jack Taylor, and how their families worked to prove that their loved ones had been murdered.
The 47-year-old Merchant, best known for his comedies like The Office, plays Port, who met his four victims online and lured them to his home in Barking.
All four men died after receiving fatal doses of drugs from Port, who later dumped their bodies locally in a murder spree that lasted 16 months.
It comes after investigations into the deceased concluded that fundamental failures of the Metropolitan Police “probably” contributed to three of the four deaths.
The show is written by Neil McKay and stars Sheridan Smith as Sarah Sak, the mother of Port’s first victim, Anthony Walgate, a 23-year-old fashion student from Hull.
“Four young people with all their futures ahead of them lost their lives in a brutal and tragic way,” McKay told Radio Times.
This is a story not only of the consequences of that loss, but also of the extraordinary courage and endurance displayed by those who loved them as they sought truth and justice. It is a privilege to be able to tell it. ‘
Anthony Walgate, Gabriel Kovari, Daniel Whitworth and Jack Taylor were found dead a short distance from Stephen Port’s east London home in 2014 and 2015.
For more than three years, the 41-year-old Port carried out attacks on 11 men under the age of 26, including the four who died, after viewing violent pornography featuring drugged men and women.
Merchant studied Port’s “body language and speech rhythms,” but the real “challenge” was creating an internal dialogue for Port during the courtroom scenes.
“I felt like what I had to do was build my own internal logic about how someone like that thinks,” Merchant said.
“I mean, I don’t know how a serial killer thinks. When we film the courtroom trial scenes … what is the person thinking in that circumstance? They know they’ve killed four men, but they won’t admit it. So do you know that they are lying? Or have they constructed a reality that they now live by? Are they navigating between truth and lies? ”
Merchant revealed on Four Lives, the murders of the Port victims are not intentionally shown on screen, adding that the series “is very much about the aftermath.”
“The incredible tenacity of these families standing up to this impenetrable monolith of the law and police Kafka-style, and they just can’t get by, that’s what seemed most devastating and heartbreaking,” she said.
“You think this is something that is going to be set in the 1970s, with the police reactions and the buzz of homophobia, but this is 2014. It’s shocking.”
